Film Sound Post-Production
This program covers the entire post-production sound pipeline used in feature films and short cinema projects. You'll work with actual film footage, learning how to build soundscapes that support narrative without calling attention to themselves.
What you'll actually do
The course focuses on practical skills: dialogue editing and cleanup, ADR recording and integration, Foley creation and synchronization, ambience design, sound effects editing, and the final mix process. You'll use Pro Tools, iZotope RX, and common plugin suites that studios rely on daily.
Technical foundation
We start with frequency spectrum analysis and how different elements occupy sonic space in a mix. Understanding dBFS metering, loudness standards like LUFS, and dynamic range becomes critical when preparing stems for mix engineers.
You'll learn to read and create cue sheets, work with timecode, and manage session files with hundreds of tracks. File organization might seem boring, but it's what separates professionals from hobbyists when projects get complex.
Real project constraints
Every assignment includes realistic limitations: tight deadlines, imperfect production audio, conflicting director notes, and technical delivery specifications. One module simulates a 72-hour turnaround for a festival deadline, forcing you to make smart prioritization decisions.
Sound design isn't about making everything sound cool—it's about making intentional choices that serve the story while meeting technical broadcast standards.
Equipment and software
You need a computer capable of running Pro Tools 2023 or later, an audio interface with at least two inputs, and studio headphones. We provide temporary licenses for specialized plugins during the course, though you'll want to budget for these tools afterward.
